Is GM Desperate Or What?

Renault 5 TurboHey Cool Car Fans,

I have to get some photos up here of my new 2007 Mazda MazdaSpeed6 that I picked up as my daily driver, after selling my 2007 Subaru WRX Limited to a client of mine.  Stay tuned for photos and details on that vehicle.

In the meantime, I had to write a quick article about the craziest PR move I’ve seen in a long time.  General Motors is now going to offer a 60 day money back guarantee.  If you’re not completely satisfied with the purchase of your vehicle they will give you your money back.  I saw this was first reported by the New York Times that General Motors wanted to prove to the world that their vehicles are as good as their competitors.  I didn’t believe it at first, but it’s for real.

Talk about a desperate attempt to get more people behind the wheel of a GM product.  They are calling it a Satisfaction Guaranteed program that is promising to give customers their money back within 60 days, if they’re not completely satisfied with their purchase. The new marketing tool, started running today and will start tomorrow.  I saw the commercials while I was watching football today and it will run from September 14, 2009 through November 30th, 2009.

This is the first time a major automaker has backed their product with a money back guarantee. The new initiative will cover new Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC models.  I’m amazed that they would do something like this because it’s going to cause tremendous problems in the marketplace and for the company because of the fine print, details and limitations.  Come on, everyone knows that you buy a vehicle and you can’t return it for a number of liability reasons.  Cars are simply not designed to buy with money back guarantees because too many things can go wrong depending on the person behind the wheel and I’m going to bet that many people are going to be really unhappy with this deal.

If you don’t believe me, you’ll have to go read the FAQ page and see the details and limitations.

For example, you have to keep the vehicle for at least 30 days, return it within day 31 and day 60 by contacting the administrator of the program for the required paperwork.  You then must have the vehicle appraised and if there is at least $200 in damage you won’t qualify for a refund.  The refund doesn’t include dealer fees, accessories, finance charges and a number of other fees.  You can’t get your trade-in back and you are responsible for any negative equity you may have had on that vehicle.  You can have up to 4,000 miles on the vehicle.  You can’t do this deal if you’re looking for a truck for your business, but only for personal purchases.

This program may be good for some people who are in a strong financial position and just want to drive a GM vehicle for 60 days to see how they like it.  Odds are good they’ll keep it and that’s what GM is banking on with this promotion.  However, you might want to just rent a GM vehicle before you go through this ordeal.  How many people will go through the brain damage of trading their vehicle, getting financed, drive the car for 4,000 miles and then return it because they decided they don’t really like it?  If they decide to and they find out they don’t qualify for this 60 day guarantee for some reason, what’s going to be the PR backlash against GM when dealers start refusing to take back vehicles or not refunding certain fees?

You can read the full details, including the FAQ’s by clicking here.

What About The LeCar

Renault 5 TurboHey Cool Car Fans,

One of our visitors to CoolCarGuy.com sent me a video the other day and asked me if I would write something up about the LeCar, also known as the Renault 5. I figured, what the heck, especially when I found this really cool photo of one tricked out as a race car with a turbo from a race back in 2005.

Actually, a friend of mine in High School, Brent Niccum, owned one of these little cars and none of his friends, including me, could believe he bought it. Brent was 6 foot 4 inches tall and on the basketball team, so when he drove around this little car, it was like putting him in a go-cart and it looked like a clown show when he got out of the car.

I road in it many times with Brent and I have to admit that it was a pretty reliable little piece of machinery and fun to drive. I don’t remember him having too many problems with it and he really liked it. I’m surprised that Renault hasn’t brought it back into the U.S. Market with the recent four dollar gas hike we experienced last year. However, with it’s 44% stake in Nissan, they did come out with the fuel efficient Nissan Versa as a fuel efficient ride a few years ago. I’ve helped a couple of my clients get those vehicles and they really like them, you can even tow them behind a motor home, which is what one of my clients uses it for.

Renault made the first generation of the LeCar from 1972 – 1984, which is what Brent owned. About 1,300 AMC dealers at the time marketed them and American Motors (AMC) called it LeCar instead of Renault 5. It was designed to compete with the VW Rabbit and the tiny Honda Civic. Then in 1985 – 1996 they rolled out the second generation with a transversely-mounted powertrain taken from the 9 and 11 and a set of MacPherson Struts to beef up the suspension. I’m not sure that it actually did, but that was apparently the idea.

In the U.S. it featured a 1397 cc I4 engine that produced 55 hp, and a floor-mounted shifter was substituted for the dash-mounted unit. By 1977 it was popular among sports car enthusiasts and destined to become a classic. I found an ad that was pretty cool, since they dubbed it as Le Sports Car at the time. You can see it by clicking here.

The New Mercedes Benz E-Class Commerical Is Super Cool

Hey Cool Car Fans,

eclasscoupeI was watching the PGA Championship today with Tiger Woods and Y.E. Yang battle it out when a commercial for the new Mercedes Benz E-Class Coupe came on.

It’s so cool that I had to track it down and post it here at CoolCarGuy.com. The car is awesome and the commercial pretty much says it all.

The new E-class is fantastic, especially as a coupe with a really neat look to it and I’m sure it will be a huge seller for Mercedes Benz as a competitor for BMW’s coupe.

Mercedes put a pretty wild website together showcasing the car with some super models as well that you can checkout by clicking here.  It’s kind of strange, but something different you haven’t seen before.

Here’s the commercial…

Lexus IS-F Cool Car Commercials

Hey Cool Car Fans,

As many of my followers know, Becky and I go to the movies every week and I write movie reviews over at GoblinNetwork.com and SalesFreak.com for people to follow our trips to the box office.

2009LexusIS-F

I’ve been seeing some great commercials for the past year, on the big screen, from Lexus on their IS-F performance vehicle.  The IS-F has been designed to compete against the BMW M series and the commercials are pretty cool, so I figured I would put them up here at CoolCarGuy.com with some details on this ride.

I have some clients who are having me look for Lexus vehicles for them right now, so I thought I would show these commercials as a teaser on where Lexus is heading to move from just a luxury vehicle company to a high performance vehicle company.

This vehicle rocks for starting at around $56,760, plus dealer handling and any other options.

  • 5.0 liter V-8
  • 416hp – 371 lb-ft torque
  • 8 Speed Sport Direct Shift
  • 0-60 in 4.6 seconds

Check out the commercials.  This one shows all six of them in a row.

Cool Car Shots – 2006 Ford Mustang GT | 2009 Subaru Legacy GT

Hey Cool Car Fans,

2009LegacyGT2A couple who are clients of mine, Mike & Debbie Walker sent me a double shot photo of their vehicles that I helped them purchase, along with a few additional photos of Debbie’s 2009 Subaru Legacy GT Limited.

Actually, it’s a pretty funny story how I met Mike and Debbie to help them get their vehicles.

Mike Walker had contacted me early last year about a 2005 Pontiac GTO that I had on consignment.  It was a midnight blue color with black leather interior and a pretty sweet ride with plenty of power.  You can see photos of it here at CoolCarGuy.com, if you search on the keyword Pontiac.  It was a very cool car with 400hp and a 6.0l engine that could light up the pavement and was super fun to drive.  It ended up going to another client of mine from Europe, but that’s another story.

2009LegacyGT1

He came over and took the GTO for a drive and it reminded him a little too much of the Pontiac G6, instead of the classic GTO because of the body style. Mike was looking for something with that older muscle car flare like you find with the new body style Mustang, Challenger, Charger and the all new Camaro.  If there was one mistake that Pontiac made when they brought back the GTO that was it, they didn’t go Retro, but it doesn’t matter now that Pontiac is a classic car company under the new GM.

After driving a few vehicles, Mike decided that he wanted me to go after a 2006, Ford Mustang GT coupe with 300hp as his new ride. I tracked one down for him and you can see it in the picture above.  I got it for him through the Dealer Auctions that I have access to through hanging my license at a car dealership instead of being a vehicle Buyer’s Agent like some of the guy’s are around town and it was exactly what he wanted.  In fact, it was like special ordering a used car that I’ve done for many people over the years.

That was not the end of the story though for Mike and Debbie.  Mike went home and told his wife that he had purchased a vehicle from some guy who called himself The Cool Car Guy, a John Boyd, and  Debbie said, “I went to High School in Hudson, WI with a guy named John Boyd, what did he look like?”  Apparently, I fit the description.

I turned out to be the same guy Debbie went to High School with about 1,000 miles away from Denver and we had both moved to this part of Colorado years ago.  Fast forward and Debbie and I ended up being friends on Facebook earlier this year.  If you’re not on Facebook, it’s a pretty cool free service that another client had turned me onto using.  I didn’t realize that I had sold her husband their Mustang!  How funny is that?  She wrote on my wall that I had helped her husband and she wanted to trade her Subaru, so I helped Debbie get a 2009 Subaru Legacy GT that she now loves.

The vehicles look pretty darn cool together and I asked her to send me some photos of them, which she did.  They are now here for you to take a look at and enjoy.  Obviously, Debbie sent the photos since there are more photos of her vehicle than Mike’s.

Two great cars that go great together!  These are two super cool cars that go great together.  It almost sounds like a Reece’s peanut butter cup or Double Mint gum commercial because they look like they match other than one being American and the other Japanese.

Super Cool.

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman hd

Cool Car Shot – 2009 BMW X6

BMWX6_1Hey Cool Car Fans,

I was at the car wash last week and while I was there I spotted this sweet 2009 BMW X6 that had come through the wash and was being dried off. I couldn’t help but ask the owner, who’s name was Char (I’m assuming that she spelled her name kind of like Cher only with an a instead of an e), if I could take a few photos of her ride. She said she didn’t mind and she told me that she had owned six BMW’s and this was her favorite one of the bunch.

If you’re not familiar with this vehicle, let me share with you a little bit about it. The BMW X6 was based closely on the popular X6 Concept vehicle. BMW launched the X6 coupe-crossover for the 2009 model year, but don’t be fooled because it’s really a sedan on steroids.  They have called it a “Sport Activity Coupe”, which is really the first of its kind. It’s for people who want the functionality of an SUV, but like the performance and styling of a sedan.  Along with the wild exterior comes an all-new twin-turbo V8 that will find its way into other new BMWs in the coming years.

BMWX6_2It’s not just any twin-turbo, but one that delivers 300hp in the X6 xDrive35i and 400hp in the xDrive50i.  This ride fetches $55,900 and $66,650 respectively, depending on how the model is fully equipped.  Each of these vehicles get around 18 – 20 mpg on the highway.   So, you can get performance with gas mileage that is similar to an SUV, but how many SUV’s do you know with a twin-turbo 4.4l V8 and 407hp at 5,500 RPM’s?  Talk about a cool car that drives like a road worthy rocket ship that will go from 0 to 62 mph in about 5.4 seconds.

Even the xDrive35i has a twin-turbo 3.0 V6 with 307hp is a fantastic option and plenty of performance for most drivers.  BMW is the first automaker to bring such an SUV to market, but I’m sure other automakers will be planning similar coupe-like utility vehicles as more people spot these on the road. Land Rover recently unveiled its LRX coupe-crossover concept that looks interesting, but it’s hard to beat the BMW for all around quality and performance at a great price.

BMWX6_3If there is one shortfall of this vehicle it’s that it only seats four people instead of five like the X5 model.  However, the rear seating is on the same level as the front seating with incredible amenities in the vehicle.  This includes Google to car features that allow you to send a map to the car from Google through your computer, along with sport and steptronic manual shift modes, and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters to name just a few.  You get luxury with fantastic performance and just an all-around very cool vehicle for Colorado or any location with a change of Seasons.

Cool Car Guy Rating: Extremely Cool

The Cool Car Guy Show – June 26th, 2009

StarbucksHey Cool Car Fans,

Hoss and I were at the Starbucks last Friday in Castle Rock and we recorded a live version of The Cool Car Guy Show. It’s a pretty good show. Hoss is an awesome co-host and I couldn’t do this show without himor you would be bored out of your mind just listening to me talk automotive news for 40 minutes. I actually downloaded it and listened to it on my iPod this week while I was out on a run. My wife thought that was kind of weird, but I needed to see if it was any good and it’s pretty cool.

I hope to catch Hoss tomorrow and see if we can record tomorrow’s show in the morning. I’m helping out with TheRock.org for the Day Camp with the kids and all week I’ve been doing kid’s events. Today, I was at WaterWorld and it was freezing with the weather, but we all had a good time with 170 wet elementary kids.

BMW M5

Tomorrow I’ll be driving the church van to Boondocks up off of 120th in the afternoon, along with three school buses descending on that amusement park.  Then tomorrow night we’re ending up in Monument with all the teenagers and adults to play broomball until Midnight and I’m the designated bus driver for the group, so that should be a good time. All in a day’s work for The Cool Car Guy.

On this episode we talked about a comparison out of MotorTrend Magazine between the BMW M5 and the Cadillac CTS-V and it made for an interesting way to start the program. We also talked about some of my stories from real life as The Cool Car Guy and my take on buying used cars. We also mentioned the upcoming Classic Car Show in Castle Pines Village on Saturday, July 11th from 3PM – 6PM that some of you in the area might want to check out.

The show is about 40 minutes long again and it’s pretty entertaining and informative. We try to have a good time doing the show and hopefully it comes through that we enjoy doing it.  If you need assistance getting a vehicle be sure and drop me an email or give me a call.

Cadillac CTS-VWe’re going to be creating the show on different days of the week at unique locations, but it was pretty fun at Starbucks since that place is a money machine with a constant flow of traffic, so you’re going to want to follow The Cool Car Guy on Twitter@coolcarguy or both Hoss and I on Facebook (Cool Car Guy) to find out where we’ll be on any given day. Tomorrow we’ll be at a Starbucks again, but I’m not sure if we’ll be in Castle Rock because I’m running with some buddies at 6:45AM tomorrow morning and it’s going to be a long day!

By the way, I got my wife Becky an Infiniti FX35 and I need to get some photos up here for people to check it out. I also got my Subaru with some new lettering on it and it seems to be pretty happy. I’ll try to get some updated photos up one of these days when my life slows down.

Cool Car Looking For A New Driver – 2007 Audi Quattro 2.0T

2007 Audi A4Hey Cool Car Fans,

I bought a 2007 Audi A4 2.0 turbo for a client of mine and his situation changed, so know you can great your hands on this very cool ride.

What can I tell you about this vehicle that you probably don’t know if you are an Audi enthusiast.  The A4 is extremely popular and it comes in a FWD and a Quattro version.  This is the Quattro, so it’s all-wheel drive and Audi is the company that pioneered AWD to the marketplace and these are a blast to drive, especially with the turbo.

The Audi Quattro is a road and rally car that is produced by the German automotive coompany Audi that is part of the Volkswagen Group.  It was first shown at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show on March 3rd.  There is a great article that goes into more details about the history of the Audi quattro technology at Wikipedia buy Me and You and Everyone We Know .

2007 Audi A4 2This vehicle will have a new set of brakes and has had a safety inspection and is ready to roll.  It needs nothing.  If you want to see more pictures, you can click here to check it out at JFR & Associates.  If the link doesn’t work that means I sold it.

I can get you financed with 40 credit unions and a number of banks to choose from through JFR & Associates. If you are interested and want to see it, call me at 720-771-6269 and I’ll get in touch with my client to show it to you.

Ref: Stock number: JB91354

I’m listing it at $21,695 and you’ll see these priced all ove the place on AutoTrader and other sites, but this is the best condition of any that I’ve seen and it’s still under warranty.  Here’s what they are going for on AutoTrader by the way, so this is below the average price of what’s in the marketplace and it’s in mint condition.

2007 Audi A4Average Price: $23,244

Highest Price: $31,995
Lowest Price: $18,993

The used car market is going great, so don’t believe the headlines that the auto industry is hurting. New car sales are in the tank, but used car sales are strong in Denver and abroad.

People still have to drive, cars break down and have to be replaced and more people are buying used vehicles right now, but finding them can be a challenge.

Check out NADA for details on this 2007 Audi Quattro 2.0T, which at the time of this posting is $24,700 for clean retail.

Cool Car Looking For New Home – 2003 Mercedes-Benz C240 4Matic

Hey Cool Car Fans,

Want to get a great vehicle at a great price!  I have a dealership that I work with looking to sell a 2003 C240 4matic that they have in their inventory.  I had a buyer for it and the young girl’s Dad decided that he didn’t want his daughter in a Mercedes after talking with their mechanic friends who don’t work on Mercedes.  Of course, that should tell you something right there.

Last year, I spent about $75,000 fixing vehicles and Mercedes are some of the most reliable and safest cars on the road.  A new key for this ride was $150, compared to $300 for a Mazda that I had to get a key for recently, so the perception isn’t complete reality.

The fact is that the German’s & European’s make some, if not the best, production cars in the world, Mercede-Benz, BMW, Audi are fantastic performance and luxury vehicles.  The Japanese are constantly chasing the Europeans and not the other way around.  As far as safety, there is no comparison.  If you’re playing bumper cars ever on I70 in the Winter, you’re not going to be thinking about the cost of maintenance, but whether or not you’re going to walk away alive.

This ride is ready to go!  I took it in for a safety inspection and it needs nothing. I’m putting details of it here at CoolCarGuy.com for people to find out about it, so contact me if you are interested in this vehicle.

It has a new set of tires and is in fantastic condition.

Cool Car Guy Heading Back To Denver – 2005 Nissan Frontier XE

cactusHey Cool Car Fans,

I am heading back from Tucson, AZ after a week of being on vacation with my family and seeing some very cool cars down here in the desert.  On the way to the airport, I was cracking up to see a mint condition red Pontiac Fiero.  As we approach the demise of Pontiac by GM’s pathetic management of their company and brands, the old Fiero’s will probably become classic cars as there are so few of them in good condition left. They weren’t built to hold up like the older classics.

ChallengerA woman passed us in a 1967 Ford Mustang in mint condition, that was white with red racing stripes. What a beautiful looking car that was with such pretty lines and fun to drive. It looked like it was just driven off the showroom floor.

While in Tucson we have seen some great vehicles driving down the road, including two new 2009 Dodge Challengers last night at the Frost gelato shoppe last night, one was dressed in white and black with a Hemi and the other was classic orange and black with the SRT/8. Too bad Chrysler is so screwed up right now that they probably won’t be around much longer. At least they brought back the very cool Challenger for 2009 before they go the way of the Gremlin.

1975MGBWe also spotted a very cool 1975 MGB with 27,000 original miles.  My family was embarrassed that I rolled down the window and started talking to the guy about his car.  He said that his wife got it from her parents for turning 30 and it was sitting in their garage in mint condition.  It needed a little work on the engine since it sat so long without being driven, but that’s normal.

As I head back to Denver, I got a call from one of my sources for vehicles this morning and he has a 2005 Nissan Frontier XE with the following spec’s that is going to go pretty fast.  If you’re looking for one of these give me a call because the miles are right and the price is right.  Chain driven truck with great reliablity.
