The Cool Car Guy – Amazing Porsche RUF Driving Video

CCG Ad1Hey Cool Car Fans,

This weekend I was at a party in Cherry Creek with Becky and I met a guy named Patrick who lives in Castle Rock and he owns a Porsche RUF. Patrick is a former professional driver and driver trainer who actually raced in the 24 hour Daytona.  I hope to get pictures of his Porsche for CoolCarGuy.com along with a few his stories because he had some great one’s that he told me the other night.

For those of you who are not familiar with 24 Hours at Daytona, according to Wikipedia The Last House on the Left dvd , it is a 24-hour sports car endurance race held annually at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. It is held on a 3.56-mile (5.73 km) combined road course, utilizing portions of the NASCAR tri-oval and an infield road course. Since its inception, it has been held the last weekend of January or first weekend of February, part of Speedweeks, and it is the first major automobile race of the year in the United States.

The Porsche RUF is a race car.  It’s an amazing piece of machinery designed by a company called RUF that sells automobiles and performs conversions that transforms a current Porsche with RUF powerkits, suspensions, wheels and aerokits.

They have been doing conversions and enhancements to Porsche’s for more than 60 years.   The name of RUF for people who own a Porsche has meant superior quality and craftsmanship.   RUF started in 1939 when Alois Ruf, Sr. first formed his company, “AUTO RUF”, as a general service garage. The company is still in operation today at its original location on Mindelheimer Street in the small town of Pfaffenhausen, situated in southern Germany’s Allgau region.

While Ruf Sr. continued to strengthen and expand the company, his son, Alois Ruf Jr., was developing his own interests and passions for “l’art-pour-idee” in automobiles, the true sports car.  It was during the 1960’s that the Jr. Ruf, who was driven by his own interests and apprenticed to his father, started focusing on his passion of servicing and restoring Porsches.

The first RUF enhanced Porsche model made its debut in 1975. Two years later, the turbo charged 911 engine, which was enlarged to 3.3 liters by RUF through the use of larger pistons, had a distinct performance increase compared to the standard Porsche Turbo model. This was followed in 1978 by the development of a 217 bhp 3.2 liter version of the six cylinder naturally aspirated 3.0 liter engine Porsche offered (which was far below its true performance potential). This conversion was favorably received by sports car enthusiasts worldwide and resulted in numerous orders.

The rest is history.  Alois Ruf enjoys his cars as much as his customers, recognizing that powerful and sporty cars require extra skill behind the wheel not only for safety, but to be also able to enjoy the car’s true potential.  In 1978, RUF started to offer his customers regular driver training events on race tracks such as Germany’s Hockenheimring and the Salzburgring in Austria.

And that’s why you’ve got to see in this video that was posted on YouTube.  I watched this 8 minute video earlier today of a guy driving on a what appears to be a closed race trac, similar to what RUF offers their customers and I was blown away.  This video is incredible.  If you like to drive as much as I do, you will get a major kick out of watching this video.  There are a few times where you think for sure this dude is going to lose it and he’s passing people on this track and just flying passed them in his yellow Porsche RUF.

I’m giving it a five star Cool Car Guy rating of:  ***** Extremely Cool

The Cool Car Guy – Save Thousands Buying Used

CCG Ad1Hey Cool Car Fans,

Contrary to what many of our politicians may want to tell us the fact is that the economy and elevated gas prices have had a serious impact on American households. I see it everyday with more people calling me for used cars than new cars and looking at a complete cost of ownership when selecting a model.

2008 PathfinderHere’s a thought to think about if you’re trying to save a few bucks. Consumer Reports

Origin: Spirits of the Past film

showed that on a typical new car, depreciation accounted for 46 percent of the owner costs over five years.  Everyone knows that depreciation is greatest in the first year, but I’ve been amazed at what I’ve been witnessing in a number of vehicles. The bottom line is that if you’re interested in saving money, and not just getting better fuel economy then consider buying used.

This week I purchased a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder LE with under 7,000 miles at the Dealer Auction and I’m delivering it to my client next week and save him thousands off of the invoice price of the vehicle.  The Pathfinder LE has an MSRP of $39,000, so imagine the shock my client had when he discovered that he would save thousands by having me track down a low-mileage used vehicle.  Had he purchased that vehicle new he would have lost thousands the very first year.  By the way, the Pathfinder is a great vehicle.  This is just an example of what’s happening in the marketplace for certain vehicle models.

2008 PathfinderIf you focus on a nearly-new model, even one, two or three years old, you can find a vehicle that offers comparable fuel economy, performance, safety, and reliability as a new car.  You can also get the remaining factory warranty coverage included with your purchase.

Another issue that many people don’t think about is the sales tax issue, plus insurance and registration on used cars is less than new vehicles as well.  All of this leads to a vehicle that is lower to purchase and drops the total cost of ownership considerably.  In addition, buying a used vehicle can put a better-equipped model, like the Pathfinder LE that I mentioned above that he is getting for thousands less than what he would pay for an SE.  Buying used can definitely put a larger, better-equipped model within your budget, but if fuel economy is your driving motivation there are some really great vehicles out there, in American, Japanese, Korean and European models.

Maybe I’ll write another article in November showcasing some of the choices you might want to take a look at or contact me if you are interested in having me track something down for you.

Electrum Spyder – All Electric Prototype for Sale

CCG Ad1Hey Cool Car Fans,

I had an email sent to me this weekend, telling me about the new Electrum Spyder electric prototype vehicle that is going for $75,000 and I thought I would post it here for my visitors to check out. Obviously, there has been a ton of interest in electric and other alternative vehicles to give Americans an opportunity to get off our addiction to foreign oil.

This vehicle was showcased in California earlier this Summer and there is an interesting YouTube Video that you can check out, if you’re interested.

Electrum Spyder 1The Electrum Spyder is a 2 passenger convertible all electric freeway flier that will be available in limited production as a prototype. Powered by a 300 vdc system, the Spyder provides an effective range of up to 150 miles on a full charge using nickel zinc batteries, but they are continually looking for ways to increase the range as battery technology improves. As with all of our Electrum series the Spyder can be upgraded to Lithium Ion batteries when available with a range of up to 300 miles on a single charge.

Here’s the email that I received, so if you’re interested in checking it out or you want more information on how you can get one of these, drop me an email and I’ll fire you off details on how we can arrange for you to get this $75,000 electric vehicle in your garage. Keep in mind that this is a prototype vehicle, so it’s not for the average consumer, but for someone who has plenty of disposable income and wants to make a statement or be involved in getting Americans additional options in the marketplace.

Hey Cool Car Guy,

This is to inform you of the opportunity to buy the Electrum Spyder – all electric running prototype. The sale price of $75,000 includes the Electrum Spyder prototype and a 3 wheel design life size mock up prototype for commuters.

Electrum Spyder 2The Spyder car is a prototype/concept vehicle and is ready to be completed for tooling. The drive train system could have patent possibilities. Further investigation by the new owner will determine that. The DC drive system has been working flawlessly since 2001. The controllers are by Curtis. This is a dual drive dual motor system for testing purposes.

Our intentions were to bring to market an affordable electric vehicle hence using a DC drive with Lead Acid batteries. It is currently set up for testing at 20.4kw. a range of approximately 35 miles, 0-60 to be determined. As we progressed in marketing and testing we came to the conclusion that what was important for the consumer was distance. We knew that after funding took place we would have to change over to an AC 320 volt li-ion 56kw drive which would give us a range of approximately 250 miles, which is what we would recommend the new owner implement.

This is an exceptional opportunity! The prospects are endless. The length of time it takes to come up with an alternative fuel vehicle car design and implement it, is, to say the least, lengthy and costly. You have the opportunity available to produce an all electric vehicle and have them on the road within a year’s time.

This is a firm price. Please contact us if you are a serious buyer.

If you want more information, drop me an email and I’ll get in touch with the owners for you.
