Cool Car Shot – Jeep Wrangler Climber

Hey Cool Car Fans,

WranglerMy wife Becky and I took our three kids up to the scenic St. Mary’s Glacier Hackers this weekend, which is about 20 minutes outside of Idaho Springs, Colorado.

As we were hiking up to the glacier lake we took a few Cool Car Shots of this red Jeep Wrangler climbing down from the lake.

We also saw a Jeep Grand Cherokee going up the rocky path to the lake, but the Wrangler was too cool of a car shot to pass up.

Cool Car Shot – 1951 Ford Pickup

51Ford1I recently had an avid car fan send me photos of a very cool 1951 Ford pickup that some friends of his were looking to sell. He asked me to help him sell the vehicle and at the time of this post it’s available, but I thought it was such a cool truck that I would give it a “Cool Car Shot” posting at CoolCarGuy.com.

I’ve had a number of people asking about this truck, but nobody has stepped forward to claim the prize and put down the cash to buy it. My guess is that people are concerned about the gas mileage.51Ford2

Personally, I think this would be a great promotional vehicle for a local business. In Castle Rock, Colorado there is a guy who drives around an old restored pickup like this one for his Allstate business. The amount of advertising and business he has created from the truck has more than paid for the cost of the vehicle.

What Do I Do About My Negative Equity?

Recently, I was talking with a woman about her 1999 Lexus RX300 and received the following question from her about selling her vehicle and eliminating the negative equity….

“John,I have had this car for about 6 mos. It is in good condition, could use tires and has some normal interior wear. I would like to get what I owe on the vehicle.

I’ll attach some photos and here is the VIN #.

Also, if I am able to sell the car for less than what I owe, are you able to finance the negative equity on top of the Subaru?

There are millions of people driving vehicles today who owe more on the vehicles than they are worth. In fact, a recent study showed that as many as 37% of the people driving automobiles today are “upside down” on the vehicles they own. Personally, I think that figure is low and Tracy is obviously not alone in her situation.

In her case though, it’s always difficult to buy a vehicle and get out of it 6 months later for what you owe on it. Especially, if you paid retail for the vehicle to start with because all vehicles depreciate, especially SUV’s right now with gas prices approaching $3 a gallon. Time is what eliminates negative equity because every month that goes by you own more of the vehicle.

Tracy’s best bet is to find a buyer for her vehicle as close to what she owes on it as possible, but that’s not always easy because most people looking for used vehicles want a super deal. If they are buying from a “private party” they want to pay even less than what they would pay at a dealership.

THE LEASING ADVANTAGE

One great option for people wanting to eliminate negative equity is to lease a new or pre-owned vehicle. The lease allows a person to get a lower payment, have a guaranteed buyer of their vehicle at the end of the lease period by staying within the lease terms, and potentially roll the negative equity into the leased vehicle.

I’m currently assisting a client that is coming out of a large truck with 45,000 miles that he is upside down on by $5,900. He’s getting a 2006 Chrysler with only 15,500 miles on it and at 15,000 miles a year he will have a lower payment than what he’s paying now by almost $150 a month! At the end of his lease, he gets to start over and the $5,900 will have disappeared.

My suggestion for Tracy is to get out from under her Lexus RX300 by rolling the negative equity into a new or near new vehicle. Lease it for 36 months to get a better vehicle, a lower payment and a guaranteed buyer at the end of the lease.

VW Creates Virtual Joyride

VW has created a new feature on their VW GTI website that allows a person to add features to a VW GTI and then take the vehicle for a test drive. It’s A Buyer’s Market For Used Jag’s

JagXTypeMany of the people that I speak with about leasing a vehicle immediately get defensive because they have heard the horror stories of people who lease the wrong vehicles. However, what most people don’t realize is how leasing the right vehicle can be a huge benefit to the consumer.

For example, look at what’s happening with Ford’s Jaguar division currently. In a recent issue of Automotive News, it was reported that Jaguar Cars of North America had to remarket 20,000 vehicles and in 2005 that number soared to 27,000. These were mostly X-Types and S-Types coming off of leases. That huge number of used cars was 89 percent of Jaguar’s total new vehicle sales in 2005.

The article went on to say that this year, Jaguar will still have to remarket about 21,000 units that are expected to be returned and Jaguar’s executive vice president of marketing is viewing that figure as “a walk in the park” compared to the previous year. In fact, Jaguar has elected to stop selling cars to Enteprise and Hertz because their aggressive lease program has hurt them so bad.

In 2001 the residual value on an X-Type was 49% and in 2006 it’s still somewhat aggressive at 40%. The people who leased a Jaguar over the last few years really made out on the deal. Think about it for a minute. These people were able to drive a new and very elegant, high-end automobile for three ears with a full warranty and have Jaguar subsidize their lease payment.

At the end of the lease they walked away without having to worry about finding a buyer or getting less money by trading in their vehicle. Now Jaguar is the one that has had to scramble to sell all of these vehicles, while the savvy consumers have dropped the keys and given the vehicles back to Jaguar knowing they are not worth what Jaguar said they would be.

This is the part of leasing that most people end up missing out on. If you lease the right vehicle, drive the right amount of miles and get the right residual values and lease terms; you can really capitalize on the incentives that manufacturers offer.

Why not let the automobile manufacturers that are willing to take a huge risk to move their inventory, give you the opportunity to drive one of their new vehicles at a substantial discount and give it back to them at the end of the lease term, letting them worry about finding another buyer?

It can make tremendous sense when done correctly as is illustrated in the “Jaguar battles used-car glut” article that was featured in the industry insider magazine Automotive News.
